Job Summary:  The Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in the School of Arts and Science at the American University of Ras al Khaimah (AURAK) seeks to hire for two positions: (i) Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematical Physics for the Academic Year 2020-2021; and (ii) Instructor of Physics. We welcome candidates whose teaching employs high-impact teaching practices to promote active learning by students. The successful candidate for the Visiting Assistant Professorship will be teaching lower division courses that are required courses in various Engineering and Arts and Sciences programs. This is a one-year appointment to cover the teaching responsibilities of continuing faculty members who have sabbatical leave for the coming academic year. The second position of Instructor in Physics will be required to cover Physics Laboratories and teach one or two sections of lower division courses. The instructor position is for a multi-year appointment that is potentially renewable.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:  The teaching load is eight courses per year (a 4/4 load) at the undergraduate level. Candidates must be prepared to teach classes required by the degree plans in various schools, as well as some general education electives. Ideal candidates will have experience with, and interest in, teaching classes to undergraduates who find mathematics and physics challenging. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to mentor and advise outside class time so as to promote students’ persistence in the undergraduate program. Instruction could include teaching one or more developmental courses. 


Qualifications:  For the Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematical Physics position – a Ph.D. in the discipline is required.  For the Instructor of Physics position – a master’s or doctoral degree. in Physics or Science Education or a closely related field is required.  For both positons, prior successful teaching experience at the university level employing high-impact educational practices and experience in working effectively with globally diverse student populations are expected. Also highly desirable is prior experience providing assistance to students with learning and applying math and science concepts through work in an Academic Support Center.
